YOU MAY WONDER: So, Mariby, why all the elephants? Funny, I never really thought about it, until a guest brought it to my attention, “I see you like elephants?” Never having read the description of what an elephant symbolizes, I simply responded, “I don’t know, somehow I feel a connection with the elephant, as if, perhaps in a former life, I may have been an elephant. LOL”

Then, I did some research on what an elephant symbolizes, which only confirmed my inner sense of connection.

SYMBOLISM: Elephants represent majesty and wisdom, strength and good fortune. They symbolize abundance, responsibility, longevity, intelligence linked with ancestral memory. Elephants also symbolize health and happiness and promote spiritual and familial well-being. A matriarchal tribe or herd, though elephants are strong, they have a need for comfort. As well, they are nurturing, highly social, sensitive souls, immensely loyal to their families—greatly determined and fiercely protective, as they take care of and are responsible for their elders, as well as care for and teach and nurture their offsprings, and always stand up against others to defend the members of the herd and it’s natural habitat. So, they demonstrate kindness, empathy, compassion and altruism. An ancient soul, the spirit of the elephant inspires us to live an abundant, happy, healthy, family-balanced life!

ELEPHANT FACTS: Although elephants are the worlds largest land animal—weighing up to 6 tons, they are gentle creatures, and amongst the most intelligent mammals on the planet, smart—their trunks have some math skills, as well, elephants use their trunks to smell, eat, breathe underwater, make sounds, clean themselves, and defend themselves. Their tusks are actually teeth, they’ve got thick skin—1”; though, highly sensitive to sunburn—why they mud themselves as sunscreen, they are constantly eating, though contrary to popular belief, they are non-meat, vegan-healthy eaters—grasses, leaves, fruits, shrubs and roots. With an excellent sense of hearing, they communicate through vibrations, body language, touch and scent. From sensitive nerve endings in their feet and trunks, through lower frequency vocalizations and foot stomping, elephants warn other elephants by stomping the ground, allowing other elephants near and far to pick up the warning, helping elephants survive. Large in size—coining the phrase, “The elephant in the room,” they are heavy and are strong, as much as buoyant—yes, elephants can swim; they also use their trunk as a snorkel, when crossing deep water, so they are able to breathe normally even when submerged. Tribal, highly ritualized, healthy, habitual creatures, they can live up to 70 years old. Even amongst unrelated animals, elephants show compassion, pay homage to the bones of the dead and express grief, compassion, as well, self-awareness, altruism, joyful play. The elephants temporal lobe (the area of the brain associated with memory) is larger and denser than that of humans, hence the saying, “Elephants never forget!” Sad fact, a consequence of illegal ivory trade or poaching, elephants are becoming extinct.
