This one of #GranniesTonics I just had to share with you! You need to know that Grannie’s been working, and by that I mean, steadily researching, learning, testing, finding natural remedies to help lower her blood pressure and, ultimately, to come off her blood pressure medication, all together.

It’s Sunday! Y’all know me; I’m resting with my feet up and here’s Grannie working hard in the kitchen - Vitamix on full blast! But, on this particular day, I couldn’t help but pick up the camera, when I saw on the counter, all of the herbs she’d gathered! So, I asked, Grannie, what are you making with all of that? When she began describing her, Hisbiscus & Ginger (Blood Pressure Lowering) Tea, I just knew that I had to record it. I’m thinking future generations!

Grannie’s not into the camera; though, I insisted that she pose with at least one of the shots I took; she even wanted to take off her glasses. I insisted, “No! I want people to see you as you are everyday, in your discipline and what it takes to Right your own natural prescriptions for good health!

Blood Pressure Lowering Herbal Blend

See the list of herbs below Grannie has researched and gathered over the years to make what she calls her, Hibiscus & Ginger Blood Pressure Lowering Tea. To me, it’s quite involved, but for Grannie, it’s saving our lives; though, for you, Grannie suggests that you may choose to use all or a combination of the following ingredients or just select your preferences and omit any that you have issues with (allergy, intolerance, etc.). While Grannie personally likes a strong concentration of tea, sweetened with lots of honey, she urges you to experiment with your preferences on the strength of the tea. Personally, I like mine light and very little honey! You may prefer yours with or without sweetness! No matter, just get the good stuff in you on a daily basis!

INSTRUCTIONS

Gather your herbs, spices, fruits, etc., measure 1 cup (tea leaves) to 1/4 cup (herbs & spices) of each ingredient (depending on your preference), bring to a boil, then simmer on low for 30 to 60 minutes. After simmer, turn off the burner and let steep for several hours and/or overnight, strain and sweeten to taste with raw honey. Yields 1 gallon; store in the refrigerator (Grannie goes through a gallon in one week).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Grannie says that herbs like Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Shankapushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis), Chandana ( Santalum album), etc. can also be taken. All are effective ayurvedic cure and treatment for hypertension.

  • Herbs like Aloe Gel, Barberry, Katuka, Gotu Kola, Calamus, Valerian, Skullcap, Cayenne, Myrrh, Motherwort, Hawthorn and Jatamamsi should be given priority, as these are known Ayurvedic solutions for disease. #GranniesTonics

Daily Tonics

No one could have told me that I, Mariby Corpening, would be drinking down - for my health no less - such tonics on a daily basis, to include:  1) Grannie's Breakfast Smoothie (oatmeal, grains, nuts, seeds), 2) Fruit Smoothie, 3) Vegetable Smoothie, 4) Bean Smoothie, 5) Herbal Tea Blend (for blood pressure) and 6) Grannie's Tonic.  Yup, Grannie drinks them every day; though, I only do it during the weekday and give myself a break on the weekends.  For more specific information about each smoothy, go to that specific blog entry on this page.

You choose how you prefer to work in your daily tonics; but, here's what works for me:  Since my workday schedule is so routine, I take my tonics with me to work and all day at work, it's what I consume - saves on unhealthy snacking, binging and a ton on the costs of eating out at lunch; not to mention, well, I believe it - Grannie - has saved my life! 

I've Lost Over 30 Pounds!

In the last three years, without even trying to lose weight or getting on a scale, I've lost over 30 pounds - only because my doctor told me at my last check up; so, because I [choose to] eat better quality foods, I eat a lot less, my skin is smoother, my bowels are regular, my allergies have subsided and I just feel, not to mention, look better all around!  I have a little more energy now, so, I recently begun an exercise regimen of walking, stretching and weights - and even with all this, Grannie still moves faster than I do!

You better believe that Grannie stays pretty busy in the kitchen!  She is serious about her health -  always researching, always trying something new, always finding ways to work in our daily required nutrients - naturally.  Lucky me, the beneficiary of her discipline and it has rubbed off on me, truly!

To be frank, this one took a bit of getting used to; though, again, just watching Grannie so steadfastly seeking out the natural health remedies.  Among a few other endearing names for Grannie, I also tease, The Bone Collector, and yes, it can be a little embarrassing at times, when Grannie blurts out to our guests, Don't throw away the bones!  Some guests curiously inquire, Grannie, what are you going to do with the bones?  While others remain silent, likely cringing  at the thought!  Yeah, that used to be me!

All bones and shells!  Chicken Bones, Pork Chop Bones, Rib Bones, Shells of Shrimp, Crab Legs and even Eggs!  Yup!  You see it all in there!  Grannie throws away nothing!  She says we are throwing away the best parts, all the nutrition we should be consuming - for good health. 

Of course, you've heard about it, from, well, in my case, watching the elders in our family literally suck the marrow out of chicken bones!  As a child, I thought, Are they that hungry?  I would cringe; even now, it just looks so uncivilized.  But, well, here I am, at 56 years old, now I am one of the family elders; though, not quite sucking the bone, but the concept of ingesting the marrow, because, simply, it's good for you!  I get it, now!

You'd have to be careful going into our freezer!  Because, at all times, we have in our freezer, a bag of bones!  Even our friends and family know not to throw away their bones.  Okay, it's a little embarrassing that when we visit with friends, they say, Oh, wait, I have some bones for Grannie!  No, no, much worse:  I've often wondered, if we get stopped by the police, what explanation?  No, no, officer, you don't understand, My Grannie collects bones!  I just don't see that going over well.  Do you?

Beans, Beans

You remember the rhyme, Beans, Beans, good for your heart, the more you eat..."  So, I never would have believed that a day would come, when I would find myself eating ... beans!  I hate beans!  Except for my best friend's Vet's Sweet Dreams Baked Beans, there ain't a bean on earth I truly like!  Oh, sure, I've had some more palatable varieties in a meal or two over the years, but never, and I mean, nevvvvver have I liked beans! 

Tell you a story:  When I was in my early 20s, I had a thing for older men and there was this good-look'n gray-haired old guy (LOL probably only in his 50s) with more energy than I!  I'd see him on the elevator - the same time I was going out to to work, he would be going out for a ... what!  A walk!  I mean, who has time!  Who walks if they don't have to?  I mean, who does anything, if they don't have to?  My thinking back then, right!  But I would see Bob walk everyday and wonder!  So, one day, I [intentionally] waited to catch him on the elevator and triiiiied to walk with him.  Honestly, I couldn't keep up!  Talking to Bob, I learned that he not only walked everyday, but he ate beans everyday!  Euhhhhh! I thought, at the time, I mean, Why?  And well, look at me now!

To be honest, I am out of my league on this one!  I can't stand beans!  But, I would watch Grannie put on a big pot of beans (combination of black beans, lentils, kidneys, chick peas, pintos), oh, I don't know, maybe once every few months.  Now, Grannie and a few of my besties will eat them right out of the pot, just like that!  Makes me cringe!  But in watching Grannie with her research and her determination to come off her meds!  You heard me, Grannie slowly came off her medications, by just eating healthier foods - she chooses the natural food alternative, instead of taking a pill.  So, between watching Grannie get in her daily oats, beans, seeds, fruits & vegetables, and, of course, remembering Bob, I decided that I somehow need to get in on this "Beans" thing!

I learned from Grannie that Beans are high protein, complex carbs and fiber, containing a powerhouse of nutrients including antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, so they're heart-healthy, lowers cholesterol, low in fat, low in calories, balances blood sugar, helps reduce chronic diseases (like cancer), promotes regularity (no constipation), keeps you feeling fuller, convenient (even if you use the can variety, just rinse off the salt water), versatile and, as you know, inexpensive!

Welllll, wowwwww!  So, it didn't take long before I was asking Grannie if she could grind the beans into a smoothie that I could then just drink down; this way, I would get in the heart-healthy nutrients without having to suffer through a bowl of beans - truly, I think it's the texture that offends me so.  From childhood, just never something I could hold down, if you know what I mean!

Anyway, so now, I get a healthy dose of beans in my system everyday!  Truth told, I only do my smoothies on the weekends; there's but so many beans I can take, but Grannie does it every day! 

My Momma - Grannie is one of those people who will just do!  When Grannie decides she's going to do something; she does it!  After too many prescription medications from doctors, Grannie decided and did (slowly reduce to) come off her medications, by researching and ingesting only the foods that give her body what it needs to be healthy!  By her example alone, I am living probably the healthiest time of my life!

Veggie Smoothie

I'll be straight, a veggie smoothie doesn't even sound right to me!  But, at my age (56), I KNOW that I need to be better about getting some healthy greens inside of me.  So, I asked Grannie if she could make a vegetable smoothie that I could drink daily, and well, if you know Grannie, she got busy with her research and produced for us a powerhouse combination of healthy smoothie drinks:  Breakfast, Fruit, Bean and now, Grannie's Veggie Smoothie!

Grannie's vegetable smoothies are action-packed and most often include:  Spinach, Kale, Cabbage, Carrots, Beets, Celery, Ginger, Mushrooms, Avocado, Tomatoes, Bell Peppers and any other vegetable you'd like to throw in the mix.  The plan is to get the healthy stuff into my system in one glass full everyday!  Truly, I don't as much care about the taste of it, but Grannie does add a little honey or orange/mango juice to make it more palattable. 

I mean, think about it:  How likely are you to eat all those fruits in vegetables in one day?  My solution, Grannie's Veggie Smoothie.  So, I get my fruit, vegetables, beans, seeds and oats in everyday with Grannie's Smoothies!  And, I'll share something else with you, I've lost about 30 pounds in the last three years, slowly dropping, just from digesting healthier foods!

Breakfast Smoothie

I will be straight with you!  I am not a smoothie person.  Not into it!  Just not my thing!  So, I was slowly enticed, just watching Grannie, as always, do her own thang; though, I still wouldn't bite!  Then, one morning, I was rushing about because, well, I just don't like being late for anything.  I like to rise early enough to sit and have a quiet cup of Cafe Viennese, indulge in my artistry, write a little and even prepare, sit down and enjoy my breakfast; yes, even on a weekday!  But, this particular morning, there was no time and I fretted that I might have to settle for grabbing a fast food breakfast sandwich.  When Grannie reminds me of her Breakfast Smoothie, Momi, just drink this, and it will hold you for hoursIt's the perfect on-the-go meal.

Truly, I thought, only to appease her, I did drink it down and rushed out the door!  Moving so fast at work that entire morning, it was noon, before I realized that I never even stopped to think about that fast food breakfast sandwich.  From then on, I was sold!

Now, y'all know, I like to eat!  I love good food, fresh, whole meals, meat, bread (My Buttermilk Slap Biscuits), etc.  I want to see some excitement on my plate!  So, no, I am not a nuts and seeds person!  So, I get you; I understand, because clearly there is nothing appetizing about nuts and seeds; but, here's the thing:  It's healthy, nourishing, fast, and truly what got me, it holds me - to my next meal 4-5 hours later!

Grannie whips it up each morning in her hard-working Vitamix and sometimes she uses the Bullet for smaller servings.  Let me tell you, Grannie wears that Vitamix out!  Do you hear me!  But, I enjoy watching Grannie and her discipline and determination to Righting Her Own Natural Remedies for Her Own Good Health.  It has greatly influenced my eating habits and for this, I am eternally grateful for My Grannie!

Grannie always says, Make it your own!  Put in your breakfast smoothie the things you need (for nourishment) along with the things you like (for flavor).  Grannie puts nuts (Pecans, Almonds, Pistachios, Brazil Nuts), seeds (Flax, Sesame, Chia), beans (Lentils, Black Beans, Chick Peas), eggs, coconut milk, molasses, prunes and, for our tastes, she adds a little coffee, which gives it a richness, I particularly enjoy.  But again, do you!  That way, you'll not only enjoy the flavor, but your body will be rewarded with healthy nourishment, without all the chemicals, not to mention, you feel full for a good four hours - a natural health remedy!

What's huge for me, I find that when I drink my daily smoothies (Fruit, Breakfast, Green & Bean Smoothies), I'm not hungry; so, I most often won't be tempted to eat the too sweet or twoo salty snacks (cookies, chips, donuts, etc.).  Yes, I still eat whole meals and I still enjoy snacking; but, I find myself making healthier choices - because I am not always hungry, like I used to be!   And when I began to see subtle weight loss, smoother bowel movement, feeling lighter, clearer skin, etc., I began asking Grannie for her Breakfast (and other) Smoothies.  Grannie makes a Fresh Ginger drink my daughter particularly likes.  See Grannie's Tonics & other Smoothies.  I went from grabbing her breakfast smoothie only when I was in a rush, to now, I have one everyday (week) day.  Side note, I like mine cold (like a milkshake) and Grannie likes her hot (like cereal).  Again, do you!

I am deeply inspired by Grannie's resolve to take into her own hands her own health remedies.  Truly, I am privileged to witness not only her will, but more, her determination to combat her own health issues.  For me, it is a thing of beauty and for the sheer good of it, to watch Grannie rather laboriously go through the process - the resolve, the research, the work, the fortitude - the time and energy she commits every single day to write her own prescriptions for maintaining good health.

When Grannie's not at her computer or tablet, researching (okay and playing solitaire - no longer challenged by the New York Times Crossword Puzzles), she is in the kitchen prepping an array of fruits and vegetables she's researched for her specific natural health remedies.  The artist in me cannot help but pick up the camera and begin snapping these images before me and in my mind, for the good of generations of our great grands to come, to reap the benefits of Grannie's Tonics.

Essentially, Grannie's Daily Fruit Smoothie includes the standards, like strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cherries, grapes, pineapples, oranges, apples, watermelon, pomegranates, and of course, she'll throw in anything else her research informs necessary, like Hibiscus and Green teas, oh, and Greek Yogurt!

The idea is to get all the good for you stuff into your body everyday to help your body run more efficiently!  I will tell you that because of Grannie, I too get my nutrients everyday; though, honestly, I am not as regimented as Grannie, but I figure, even a little is more than I've ever done, the best I've eaten in my whole life and that feels good to me.

As well, I've seen the results in the both of us.  For example, weight loss, smooth bowels, clearer skin, eating less, etc.  To me, this is all really Grannie's legacy, which will surely benefit not only our great grands, but I can't help but share it with you, too!  I am amazed and honored to be here, to bear witness, I mean, That's My Momma!  She's something else; always been this way, always been My Shero, always had zero tolerance for the boolshyt - in some, but not all, people, politics, religion, medicine and these days, well, we just can't help but wonder, What's going on with the food?

Grannie's Tonics

If you've ever had the pleasure of talking to Grannie, it goes without saying, that she is a Body of Wisdom.  Grannie [My Mom] has so much to give - so, so, so much knowledge and information - always researching, always trying out natural remedies.  I'm talking home grown, like back in the old days, when your parents enforced your daily portions - whole vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, grains, fish, poultry and a lot less meat; back then, there was no such thing as take out and dining out was a rare treat, if you ever did!  Grannie says, I used to think that we didn't eat meat because we were poor; it never occurred to me, Mommie was trying to keep us fed and healthy. 

Grannie's got so many stories (many we can't mention here LOL), I decided that somehow I must chronicle as much as I can.  So, I should start off with Grannie's Tonic.

What's In Grannie Tonic?

For those who don't yet know Grannie, she takes her home-made tonics everyday, for general good health and to help combat illnesses - High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, etc.  It all started after a routine doctor's visit remedied with just too many prescriptions, to which Grannie responded, Aw Hell no!

Grannie began researching alternative good health remedies, using natural foods - vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices we [should] eat everyday; the first of which I have to share, her daily tonic.  

And if you ask, So Grannie, what's in your tonic?  She will tell you to look up Master Tonic on the internet.  Essentially, it is a combination of essential vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices ground into a liquidy pulp, a tablespoon of which Grannie takes everyday to help her body fight off infection and disease.  Some of the standards include:  Garlic, Onion, Ginger, Turmeric, Horse Radish, Chili Peppers & Apple Cider Vinegar.  From there, Grannie suggests you research your particular ailments and build your specialized tonic from there. 

FYI, we take one tablespoon one to two times daily!  Though, Grannie suggests, for example, if you feel a cold coming on, then you'd take it at least three times daily and I can tell you, it works!
